What is Carbon Reporting

Carbon reporting is the process of measuring and recording the greenhouse gases your business produces. These are often grouped into three categories – Scope 1 (direct emissions), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from energy), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions like travel, suppliers, and waste).

It helps you see where your emissions come from – and more importantly – what you can do about them.

Why do you need to understand your Carbon Footprint

Understanding your carbon footprint gives you a clear picture of how your business affects the environment – and where the biggest opportunities are to make improvements.

More and more, businesses are being asked to show that they take sustainability seriously. Larger organisations, especially in construction and manufacturing, are now asking their suppliers to provide carbon data as part of tenders or supply chain requirements. If you want to stay competitive and win work, it’s becoming essential to have this in place.

But it’s not just about meeting expectations – it's also about making your business stronger. Tracking carbon emissions can highlight waste, spot inefficiencies, and lead to smarter use of energy and materials. That often means cost savings too.

It also supports long-term planning. With the UK’s Net Zero goals firmly in place, there’s a growing push for all businesses to reduce their impact. The earlier you start, the more prepared you’ll be – and the more you can shape the journey in a way that suits your business.

Understanding your footprint helps you take control, show leadership, and be part of a greener, more resilient supply chain.
